The United Nations Secretary General has opened an inquiry into the deadly crackdown on protesters in Guinea during which a great number of women were gang raped and some killed. The leaders of the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) have also expressed support for the decision of the Secretary General of the United Nations to establish the Commission of Enquiry to investigate the September 28 violence.

This is a great opportunity to ensure that the widespread rape and sexual violence that were committed against women during the 28 September military crackdown will be fully investigated and perpetuators of these crimes will be prosecuted to the full extent of the international law with regard to pre-meditated and organized rape and sexual violence against women.

We are asking for your solidarity and action to campaign actively for real and tangible actions by African leaders and the International Community to stop these crimes and punish the perpetuators.

Don’t let the women in Guinea down, let’s make sure that these crimes will not go unpunished and ensure they do not happen again in Guinea and other parts of the World.
Sign the petition below to the leaders of the United Nations, the African Union, the ECOWAS and the European Union

Dear Leaders

The September 28th Massacre of civilians during a peaceful political rally in Conakry, Guinea was the scene of widespread sexual violence and brutal rape of women.

The United Nations has passed various resolutions condemning strongly the use of sexual violence and rape against women and girls in situation of conflicts. Those resolutions call upon the international community to take actions as required, comply with the obligations for prosecuting persons responsible for such acts, to ensure that victims of sexual violence , particularly women and girls, have equal protection under the law and equal access to justice. Resolution 1820 (2008) stresses the importance of ending impunity for such acts as part of a comprehensive approach to seeking sustainable peace , justice, truth, and national reconciliation.

Women and girls in various conflicts in Africa continue to be the target of organized sexual violence and rape and the perpetrators in most cases have not faced justice neither in their country nor in international courts that have been established to prosecute these crimes.

With the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry of the September 28 massacre of civilians, we, the coalition of women to fight sexual violence and rape of women in conflicts demand that:

1. A thorough independent investigation is conducted on sexual violence and rape that were committed during the political rally of 28 September, 2009 and ensuing crackdown by military and police forces;

2. Responsibilities of these crimes are established and the perpetrators are identified;

3. Independent mechanisms and processes are to bring to justice the perpetrators of these crimes; the perpetrators should be trialed in independent courts

4. Those who have participated or commissioned these crimes do not participate in the upcoming political process that will lead to fair, transparent and democratic elections in Guinea

Dear Leaders,

This is the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to work continuously and tirelessly to end sexual violence and rape against women and girls, especially in Africa, and to send a strong message that the World will not remain silent in the face of these extreme abuses of human dignity.

Thank you for your commitment to bringing ending organized sexual violence and rape of women and girl in conflicts. We look forward to your leadership on this critical issue.
